Lanzarote's Popular Tourist Attractions:

Los Jameos Del Agua - Underground Water Caves. Located in the north east of Lanzarote. Lanzarote's second most visited attraction. Hollywood legend Rita Heyworth called the caves the 'eight wonder of the world'. A collapsed lava tube, the caves were transformed by Cesar Manrique into a spectacular subterranean auditorium of vision and sound acoustics. There are botanical gardens, a restaurant, blind albino crabs and a tropical lagoon. Caves are open every day. Unique, underground grottoes location. Enter from the surface via a steep spiraling staircase that twists down into the earth.  Man made sculpted pools and lagoons designed by Cesar Manrique. There’s a 500 seat auditorium at the far end of the caves reached via meandering white painted pathways. Los Jameos Del Agua is a peaceful place and a site to be seen. There are several bars and a restaurant.

Cuevas de los Verdes  Caves located in the north east of Lanzarote. Cuevas de los Verdes are spectacular underground grottoes forming part of the longest volcanic tunnel on the earth. The caves stretch six km's underneath Lanzarote’s surface. The roof of the caves was formed by cooling lava, which flowed from the La Corona volcano eruption, 4000 years ago.

Fire Mountain - Montana Del Fuego - Parque National de Timanfaya  The Timanfaya Park is A UNESCO-protected bio-reserve covering over 50km2 of Lanzarote’s south. Its sweeping Mars-like plains were last covered in molten lava in the 1700s, when the volcano erupted for five years. Temperatures just below the surface are 600c. You can hire a camel ride for the journey to the top where there are spectacular views and a steam geezer.  Entry to the Park is daytime’s only. Last admissions are about 5pm.  Go beyond Yaiza on the LZ2 Playa Blanca road, and follow the road signs. Some days you may have to queue in your car to get in. Ensure you take water. Drive to the top and park car. Watch the man put some wood into the ground and it’ll catch fire! He then does the same with water. The Park's restaurant, El Diablo (The Devil), serves local specialities cooked in geothermal heat via openings in the ground with Cesar Manrique décor. Fabulous views across most of Lanzarote and beyond.

Teguise Sunday Market takes place each Sunday in the old Lanzarote capital city of Teguise. Starts 10am. Ends 2pm. Some bargains on clothes and leather goods and Teguise is an interesting town to visit. On Sundays visitors should park in one of the designated and marshalled car parks on the outskirts of Teguise, and walk into the town. Teguise has many restaurants all mainly Spanish. Restaurant Cantina is excellent, as is Restaurant Acatife, which was the 1st ever restaurant on Lanzarote. Teguise offers much Lanzarote religious history. http://www.lanzarotetourist.com/guides/teguise-market-guide.cfm

Cactus Gardens in Guatiza are located in the village of Guatiza on the northern coast and an easy drive from Arrecife Airport.  One of the most common flora & fauna features of Lanzarote are cacti. Check out weird flora in the surreal Cactus Garden, designed by Cesar Manrique. There are over 10,000 kinds of the spiky plants on show, originating from 1400 individual species. There is easy car parking on site. Visit: http://www.lanzarote.com/jardin-de-cactus

Village of Haria. Unlike the arid landscapes prevalent throughout southern Lanzarote, the lush, verdant valley of Haria is an oasis in the shadow of the island's tallest mountain range, the Risco de Famara, with heights of over 600 metres. Known locally as the Valley of the 1000 Palms, it earned its name because villagers would plant palm trees to celebrate the birth of each new child, replacing the trees burned down by pirates in the 16th Century. See http://www.lanzaroteisland.com/en/villages/haria

Village of Yaiza. Yaiza has been voted the prettiest village in Spain. Village was nearly buried under lava in the 18th Century. At the time of the last volcanic eruptions on Lanzarote, inhabitants reported seeing volcanic lava flowing towards Yaiza, only then to split into two streams and flow around the village. Thanks to its height and seclusion, Yaiza also managed to avoid being devastated by pirate raiders. For these reasons, Yaiza is known as The Miracle Village. See: http://www.spain.info/en_GB/ven/otros-destinos/yaiza.html
